Toyota Highlander vs the 2016 Honda Pilot

July 6, 2015

OK, so admittedly for the last 13 years I have told you my friends how great the Toyota product line is. It is a great product line, I will never tell you otherwise. I will however let you know I have made the switch to Honda, because I believe it is also a great product that is getting better! I want my customers , clients, and friends to have the BEST product on the market! I believe that in 2015-2016 model year Honda fills that bill.

Lets start with the all new Honda Pilot. In my opinion, the previous generation was ugly, boxy and just not modern enough. Honda has fixed that with the sleek new Pilot. Available in multiple grades starting with the LX, EX, EX-L , Touring and Touring Elite models I am sure there is a combination that will suit all your needs.

In this comparison I am going to compare to what I know. The Toyota Highlander. A redesign in 2014, it has sold well and dealers can not keep them on their lots . Like I said Toyota is a great product. The Highlander also comes in multiple trim levels, the LE, LE plus, XLE, Limited, and Limited Platinum. For this Comparison I am going to pit the top sellers against each other. The Toyota Highlander XLE and the Honda Pilot EX-L.

IMG_0107

Head to head the warranties are identical . You get a 3yr 36000 mile Bumper to bumper warranty and a 5yr 60000 mile powertrain warranty. Toyota also gives you service at the Toyota dealership for 2 years or 25k miles. For a comparably equipped SUV you will spend about $1300 more MSRP to MSRP for the Highlander. The service has to come from somewhere right? Also, floor mats are standard on the Honda Pilot, you pay extra for them on the Highlander.

The Pilot produces 280hp at 6000rpm compare to 270hp at 6200 rpm on the Highlander and 262 lb/ft of torque at 4700 compared to 248 lb/ft on the Highlander. It takes less rpm to get more power out of the Pilot and that is reflected in the gas mileage too. Check this out The Pilot gets 18 city mpg/ 26 hwy mpg/ 21 combined compared to Highlander’s 18 city mpg/24hwy mpg/ 20 combined.  Save on the price of the car and on actually using the car. Honda wins 2 out of 2, so far.

Safety is very important to me and Im assuming you as well. Toyota has the “star safety system” which consists of EBD, (electronic brake distribution) ABS, BA,(Brake Assist), VSC,(vehicle stability control) TRAC (traction control) . Honda has ALL these system PLUS the A.C.E. body structure. ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) means that no matter what the front end of the vehicle collides with, Honda has engineered the front end to displace most energy away from the passengers compartment. Toyota offers no such body structure. Honda also puts a camera (lanewatch)on the passenger side that activates with the right turn signal giving the driver better visibility of anything on the right hand side. Toyota offers no such safety.

The Honda Pilot offers 3 cubic feet more of cargo space, and tons more room in the 3rd row. After selling both products I can without a doubt tell you an average adult CAN fit in 3rd row of this generation Pilot. The Highlander’s 3rd row is better for small children.

So there you have it, a head to head from a guy that has sold both. I think the 2015-16 Highlander is a great suv , and if you buy one you will be satisfied, unless you want an SUV that will give you more Power, Room, Safety features, save you gas and Cost you less. If you want one that does all that, come see me at Altoona Honda for a Pilot.

Dear Friends, ( a letter to my past, present, and future customers)

June 16, 2015

As most of you know, I have made a HUGE change in my career. The most popular, or most common question I have been asked the last couple of weeks is, “How are you going to sell Hondas, after selling and telling me how great Toyotas were for over 13 years?” This is a fair and tough question, that really doesn’t have an easy answer. I believe that the Toyota product is a world class product and that all my previous customers, family , and friends that purchased one from me will continue to get great service from their vehicle. I will stand behind the sale and still continue to offer great service to you as well. So if there is any issues, please do not hesitate to call on me! You are still in great hands with me on your side.

The move to Honda more specifically Altoona Honda was not an easy or quick decision. Lots of time, thought , and prayers were instrumental in me making the leap. I believe, and have always believed Honda is also a great product. I have said this to many people, that I would never sell a vehicle that I couldn’t sell a person I was having Thanksgiving dinner with. While enjoying a meal I don’t want to hear about a car problem, So I only sell cars I believe will be no problem for you. Honda’s reputation for quality, durability , and reliability ensure I am still in that position.

Now lets talk specifically about why I made the switch at the “dealership” level. The family owned store I previously worked for is a great store. From product to people you can not ask for better. From the owner to the guys detailing the cars, I have made relationships that will last my lifetime. I will miss working for anwith them all.

But Jeremy, if everything was so great; Why did you leave? That is also a fair question. The first answer that comes to mind is, simply, the culture of service. Not the oil change kind, just the ordinary good ol customer comes first service that you can FEEL when you walk in the door. The extra steps and attention to detail for the customers’ benefit are what brought me here. It sounds silly, but in the end, thats what it was about. I want to serve you better, more, and give you what you want and deserve.

We are opening a new state of the art facility in the next few months which will only “up the ante” in customer service. If you are in the market for a new or used vehicle, please stop by Altoona Honda and see what true customer service is all about. Don’t forget to ask for me by name!

Toyota Recalls Certain Camry, Highlander, RAV4 and RAV4 EV Vehicles

March 11, 2015

toyota-recall

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced it will conduct  safety recalls of approximately 2,500 Model Year 2012-2014 RAV4 EV vehicles; and approximately 110,000 Model Year 2015 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and 2014-2015 Model Year RAV4 vehicles.

In the involved RAV4 EV, components in the Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Assembly, which is part of the propulsion system, may cause the vehicle to shift to “neutral” due to a software issue. This condition will also trigger a “Check EV System” warning message on the instrument panel and turn on a malfunction indicator lamp. If the vehicle shifts to “neutral”, this will result in a complete loss of drive power, which can increase the risk of a crash.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail.  Toyota dealers will repair the electric vehicle traction motor assembly.

In the involved Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid and RAV 4 vehicles, a circuit board for the electric power steering (EPS) may have been damaged during its manufacturing process. This can result in the loss of power steering assist; an instrument panel warning lamp will also come on. Manual steering is maintained, but the loss of power steering assist results in increased steering effort at low vehicle speeds and increases the risk of a crash.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail. Toyota dealers will inspect the steering column assembly and replace the power steering electronic control unit, if it falls within the affected range.

Toyota is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities caused by either condition.

Detailed information is available at www.toyota.com/recall and by calling Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., plans to conduct a safety recall of approximately 52,000 Model Year 2011-2012 Avalon sedans.

In the involved vehicles, cargo could contact one of the audio system subwoofer wires located inside the trunk, and move the wire out of its normal position.  If one of these wires contacts the metal frame of the subwoofer, it may result in an intermittent short circuit.  If this occurs, the subwoofer could overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.

Toyota is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities caused by this condition.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail.  Toyota dealers will provide a repair for the audio system.  Until the remedy is available, as a precaution, Toyota dealers will disconnect the rear subwoofer.

2016 Toyota Tacoma in one word…..WOW

January 12, 2015

2016-Toyota-Tacoma-Double-Cab-4x4-103-876x535 Introducing the all New 2016 Toyota Tacoma! Proven by 50 years of undeniable capability, an unbreakable attitude, and an off-road racing heritage, the all-new Tacoma is hungry for adventure and ready to tackle almost any challenge that it encounters. It is the ultimate tool for the outdoorsman that likes to get out there and go places.  For more info go to the “contact me” page on jeremybrowncarguy.com and put 2016 Tacoma in the subject line!

2016tacFirst, Tacoma is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) in San Antonio and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Baja California (TMMBC) in Baja California, Mexico.   Both facilities play a major role in carrying on Tacoma’s legendary reputation for quality, durability and reliability (QDR), which has been instrumental in establishing its segment-leading owner loyalty rating.  It’s QDR has also helped establish Tacoma as the highest rated vehicle in its class for resale value according to Kelley Blue Book.  The all-new Tacoma builds on this tradition with improvement in every aspect over the current Tacoma including, design, ruggedness, and performance improvements in horsepower and fuel efficiency.

Tacoma off-roading  will reach new levels of fun in the TRD Off-Road grade thanks to the addition of incredible technology.  A Multi-Terrain Select system allows the driver to choose between different types of terrain such as loose rock, or mud and sand.  Each input regulates wheel spin by adjusting throttle and brake pressure to provide maximum traction on almost any terrain.
Additional off-road technology includes Automatic Limited Slip and Locking Rear Differential, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), Clutch Start Cancel (manual transmission only), Active Traction Control, and Crawl Control.  Engaging Crawl Control allows the driver to select a speed of 1-5 mph.  The Crawl Control system takes over the acceleration and braking, allowing the driver to focus solely on steering.

Serious, yet fun!  This is the Toyota truck design DNA.  The Tacoma and Tundra are amazingly capable trucks that are designed to reflect their capability.  The Tacoma shares big brother Tundra’s more chiseled face, with a hex grille.  From there, Tacoma expresses its own identity.

Inspired by desert racing, CALTY designers in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor, Mich. made the new Tacoma all about recreational action and athletic agility.  To achieve this, the new Tacoma’s wheel flares are strong and muscular for greater wheel travel and the high-lift image reflects its purposeful capability.  Four new wheel designs range from 16 to 18 inches.

The front end givesan aggressive attitude with its bold upper grille and a taller, more muscular hood.  Mounted high above the clamp-shaped bumper sits slim, high technology headlights that feature projection beam lamps with available LED Daytime Running Lights.

From behind, the new locking tailgate emphasizes Tacoma’s wide stance and tough image. With the success of Tundra’s design, the tailgate features an integrated spoiler for improved aerodynamics and a stamped Tacoma logo.  The tailgate also adds an easy lowering feature, which allows it to slowly retract, preventing it from slamming down. For the first time ever, Tacoma is available with a tri-fold hard tonneau cover for securing gear when you’re away from the truck.

Tacoma’s tough exterior is complemented by an interior that conveys a sport truck image reflecting an athletic, go anywhere, off-road feel.  Once inside, drivers will notice a “handlebar” design theme in the instrument panel for a more driver-focused experience.  Soft-wrapped trim and metallic accents set the stage for a high-quality look and feel that is a starting point for a lot of available premium features, including:

  • Qi wireless charging
  • Smart key with push-button start
  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • Power moon roof
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Enhanced touchscreen audio,
  • Blind-spot monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert2016-Toyota-Tacoma-interior-250x175
  • And much more

In addition to offering more premium features, Toyota engineers also made the new Tacoma quieter than ever.  To do this, all seals were enhanced and a multi-layer acoustic windshield and sound-absorbing headliner were added.  Also, a floor silencer pad further reduces road noise.

The new 2016 Tacoma was primarily developed by the Toyota engineering team at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.  Starting with the frame, they added high strength steel to enhance rigidity and overall strength.  Ultra-high strength steel was integrated into the body shell using a new hot stamping process that reduces weight. No Aluminum here!

To create a truck to meet the needs of active drivers on a variety of tamed and untamed surfaces, the suspension was fine-tuned to help deliver a smoother on-road ride, while making it even more capable off-road.

2016-toyota-tacoma-double-cab-limited-mt-promo The new Tacoma will be powered by a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and an all-new, segment-first 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V6 equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection.

Both engines will be paired to a new six-speed automatic transmission with electronic shift delivering quick and easy shifting.  The V6 can also be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission.  The new powertrain makes the Tacoma more powerful and fuel-efficient than ever before.

Toyota’s Mirai is this generations Prius

December 18, 2014

A couple of things happened in 1997.  The first, I graduated from Garfield High School in Akron, Oh.  The second? Toyota launched the Prius in the U.S. Now if your like me, I dont remember much about the hoopla surrounding the Prius. The 1997 variety was ugly, slow , and I’m sure at first a hard sell.  97 prius I mean, come on now, look at this thing.  This is not an attractive car. Ok, enough beating up on it because, since the inception of the Prius it has sold over 7,000,000 units! I cant remember what generation of technology the Prius is on, but other manufacturers have either leased or bought the rights to the previous generations technology, for powertrains for their Hybrid cars. The Prius has sold so well that it is kind of a brand within a brand. There is the standard Prius, the Prius Hatchback , the subcompact Prius c and the Electric Prius EV.

In a post about the Mirai, you may ask, why am I talking so much about the Prius? The answer is, people felt the same way about Hybrid technology as they do about fuel cell technology. Toyota bet the farm on the Prius and it paid off. Instead of going towards the fully electric (and expensive) they went the other way towards the fuel cell. Toyota actually bought into the Tesla franchise and experimented with electric, with the Rav4EV. So , they couldve gone that way much easier than blazing their own trail in the Fuel Cell market.

So lets talk about the first generation Fuel Cell vehicle called the Mirai.  Unlike its Prius predessosor the Mirai is beautiful. With sleek lines, agrresive front end, and a great overall stance, you will NOT be afraid or ashamed to drive this bad boy!mirai
The Toyota Mirai is a four-door, mid-size sedan with performance that fully competes with traditional internal combustion engines – but it uses no gasoline and emits nothing but water vapor. The groundbreaking fuel cell electric vehicle is powered by hydrogen, re-fuels in about five minutes, and travels up to 300 miles on a full tank.

Mirai will be available to customers in California beginning in fall 2015, with additional markets tracking the expansion of a convenient hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Powered by an industry-leading fuel cell electric drivetrain and supported by an exceptional 360-degree ownership experience, Mirai marks a turning point for consumer expectations for a zero-emission vehicle. Now lets talk about the specifics.

Making its Mark with Performance

In its basic operation, a fuel cell vehicle works much like a battery electric vehicle. But instead of the large drive battery, Mirai’s fuel cell stack combines hydrogen gas from tanks with oxygen to produce electricity that powers the electric motor.

Toyota’s proprietary fuel cell stack represents a major leap forward in performance, delivering one of the world’s best power outputs of 3.1 kW/L at a dramatically reduced size that fits under the front driver and passenger seats. The system provides Mirai with a maximum output of 153hp, accelerating from 0-60 in 9.0 seconds and delivering a passing time of 3 seconds from 25-40 mph.

What’s more, thanks to fuel cell technology’s versatility and adaptability, the Mirai offers performance options that go well beyond a traditional automobile. In fact, the vehicle will be offered with an optional power take off (PTO) device that enables Mirai to serve as a mobile generator in case of emergency. With the PTO accessory, Mirai is capable of powering home essentials in an average house for up to a week in an emergency – while emitting only water in the process.

Safe and Reliable Transportation

Toyota began fuel cell development in Japan in the early 90s and have developed a series of fuel cell vehicles, subjecting them to more than a million miles of road testing. In the last two years alone, fuel cell test vehicles have logged thousands of miles on North American roads. This includes hot testing in Death Valley, cold testing in Yellowknife, Canada, steep grade hill climbs in San Francisco and high altitude trips in Colorado. The Toyota-designed carbon fiber hydrogen tanks have also undergone extreme testing to ensure their strength and durability in a crash.

This extended legacy of research and development is reflected in Mirai’s safety and reliability. At Toyota’s advanced Higashifuji Safety Center, the vehicle has been subjected to extensive crash testing to evaluate a design specifically intended to address frontal, side and rear impacts and to provide excellent protection of vehicle occupants. A high level of collision safety has also been achieved to help protect the fuel cell stack and high-pressure tanks against body deformation.

Mirai will also feature a broad range of standard onboard safety technologies, including vehicle pre-collision, blind spot monitor, lane departure alert, drive start control and automatic high beams.
Focused on the Consumer

Toyota believes that outstanding vehicle performance must be matched by an exceptional ownership experience. And Toyota is committed to delivering on that promise.

When it hits the market in 2015, customers can take advantage of Mirai’s $499 per month/36 month lease option, with $3649 due at lease signing, or purchase the vehicle for $57,500. With combined state and federal incentives of $13,000 available to many customers, the purchase price could potentially fall to under $45,000.

The vehicle will be matched by a comprehensive, 360-degree Ownership Experience offering a range of services, including:

• 24/7 concierge service, with calls answered by a dedicated fuel cell representative;

• 24/7 enhanced roadside assistance, including towing, battery, flat tire assistance, trip interruption reimbursement, and loaner vehicle;

• Three years of Toyota Care maintenance, which covers all recommended factory maintenance, up to 12,000 miles annually;

• Eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on fuel cell components;

• Entune and three years of complimentary Safety Connect, including hydrogen station map app; and,

• Complimentary hydrogen fuel for up to three years.

Building a Convenient Refueling Infrastructure

In addition, Toyota continues to support the development of a convenient and reliable hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

Research at the University of California Irvine’s Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) has found that 68 stations, located at the proper sites, could handle a FCV population of at least 10,000 vehicles. Those stations are on their way to becoming a reality. By the end of 2015, 3 of California’s 9 active hydrogen stations and 17 newly-constructed stations are scheduled to be opened to the general public, with 28 additional stations set to come online by the end of 2016, bringing the near-term total to 48 stations.

Nineteen of those 48 stations will be built by FirstElement Fuels, supported by a $7.3 million loan from Toyota. The company has also announced additional efforts to develop infrastructure in the country’s Northeast region. In 2016, Air Liquide, in collaboration with Toyota, is targeting construction of 12 stations in five states – New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

2014 Nissan Maxima vs 2014 Toyota Avalon

November 10, 2014

As Nissan’s 4-Door Sports Car®, Maxima has gradually evolved to provide more and more refinement.
